The Jewel is in the Lotus
‘The Jewel is in the Lotus’ is one of several lotus paintings I’ve done the past several years due to my fascination with these seemingly miraculous flowers. Much like ‘April Flowers bring May flowers’, the lotus embodies one of my favorite themes — that of transformation of one substance or state of being into another, completely different one. In the case of the lotus, muck is dredged from the bottom of lakes, ponds & swamps to be transformed into impossibly complex and beautiful blossoms. From the very unlikely bottom of a swamp — such as the one near my magical childhood home in northern Michigan — comes an endless source of surprise, beauty, and inspiration.
