Meet "Evelyn!" Evelyn is a 4-string acoustic-electric box guitar made from an antique silverware box. Box guitars were popularized in America after the Civil War, primarily by recently freed slaves. Instruments were expensive, however, a discarded fruit crate or cigar box combined with a broom handle and a piece of wire could produce a primitive yet dynamic sound. Often they were played with a piece of copper pipe used as a slide. Many blues staples owe origins to the melodies created on these basic handmade instruments. She is named for the mother of the friend who gave me the box. She features barometer face, antique clock gears, drawer pulls and door hardware.
